The Society is the oldest established teaching body (est. 1958) and professional association for the Alexander Technique. An elected Council acts as a managing body and oversees the running of the organisation. The Society's aims are to:

  • maintain and improve professional standards;
  • make the Technique more widely known;
  • facilitate contact between members;
  • encourage research into the Technique;
  • prevent abuse and exploitation by untrained people.

STAT has within its membership teachers who were trained personally by FM Alexander, thus giving direct access to the original tradition. There are currently seventeen STAT-approved training schools in the UK .

All STAT's teaching members have completed a full-time three-year training course and are encouraged to participate in STAT's programme of post-graduated education and training. Members are bound by STAT's Code of Professional Conduct.
